I talked to a production manager recently who uses a people-first approach to improving manufacturing efficiency. In his words, "Tools are only effective if you have good people utilizing them. The investments we make to improve our operations begin with people first." He prioritized investing time and resources into training his line workers before anything else. The result? Accountability, responsibility, and 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆. Don't forget to invest in your human capital.

How many repetitive tasks are you working on today? There are multiple micro steps to creating something great, however, these little micro functions add up over time. The classic, "save" button. How many times are you clicking on it? Maybe it is a sequence of buttons, "File" -> "Save As" -> "PDF" What if we extend it past a few software tools. "File" -> "Save As" -> "PDF" -> Open another app -> "Open/Import" -> Browses to folder -> Click on file. How many of these repetitive tasks do you do a day? Did you know these can be automated with a single click of a button? Over time, these actions can become repetitive, boring and even stressful. There seems to be a personal Clicking pit of despair for each of us. Mine is: "File" -> "Save As" -> "Export STL" ->"All bodies" -> "Import STL" -> "Place on face" -> "Generate Supports" -> "Print" Please help #productdesign #design #product #automation #business #optimization

The ice cream man is obvious, but the engineer?? Yeah, this relates to a lot of engineering fields... But I'll beat on mechanicals for this go around. If you're doing product development and looking at a new contractor, and you want to identify risks to the project, look at the hands or shoes of their engineers. Because the SOLE job of a mechanical engineer in the product development world is to MAKE SOMETHING. It's not papers, it's not code, it's a real, physical thing. You touch and feel. It gets cut, welded, put together, taken apart. And the biggest red flag you can ever find in a new contractor is if their engineers ACTUALLY do things with their hands. Now not everyone can go and build a house or make race cars, but they should be wrenching on a vehicle, a random project, building the random wife requests, something. Making a mess trying things and failing and figuring it out. WHY??? This is our continuing education. We study other's work and realize how and why they did it, and most importantly, we understand why it doesn't work. Why did it break, why is this a beast to repair, why is this junk building up here, why is there no access to this part, why is gun drilling such a pain, why do these orings leak before anything else... the list goes on and on. And as we endure the pains of this process, we LEARN. We take that to the next design task and go - man that sucked, i hate for anyone else to do that too.... Guess what you get... a design that sets you apart from your competition - long term gains... But way more important is the development project. They KNOW what works and doesn't and they can see 20 steps ahead of the project and will adjust designs when you have the time to do so. Not the 11th hour "oh crap, how do we fix this and get paid..." nonsense. You get a project design that comes together in a straighter line and is driven from all the physics. NOT JUST the skittles on the computer screen. This will save tons of cash and time. It's a night and day difference if you've ever experienced it. And never, ever trust that skinny ice cream man... he has no idea what he's talking about.
